[Chris and I are walking into our apartment. I spot a young woman sitting in a chair holding a small chubby baby boy. She’s holding him sort of weirdly, with his head towards her stomach and his legs dangling towards her knees.]
Chris: Wow, he’s cute.
Me: Yeah, and really small…he’ll be pooping on the ground soon.
Chris: What?
Me: That’s why she’s holding him like that, he’s too little to sit up so he’s lying down. She’s waiting for him to go to the bathroom. You know, she’ll pull his legs up.
Chris: Ohhh, and I thought it was just going to be cute.
Me: Nope, poop is involved.
Although I’ve seen the public squatting numerous times now, I have to wonder how parents and grandparents know how to time going to the bathroom for really small children. Do they just hover or squat them every 30 minutes? Every hour? After they eat? Or when the baby makes a weird face? It seems like it would be extremely inconvenient, not to mention messy, if you were trying to go grocery shopping to take a baby out without a diaper. Messy for the parents, baby, the street and unfortunately the stores.
