I'm afraid everywhere I go, if I go back will never be quite the same. It always seems as though everything is always changing, be ripped down, being rebuilt, etc. I hope Nanjing doesn't change too awfully much. I really liked it there. I really liked the atmosphere, the experience and I felt the most "at home" there. Maybe it's because you lived there and knew there, so we were more comfortable there, I don't know.

The US is always good at blaming someone else. We all should work together our children and grandchildren nieces and nephews should be safe playing with toys, the whole situation is so out of control. I totally feel these toy companies have one thing in mind money...not the safety of the children sad isn't it!?

Hear, hear. Every time another story comes on the news about yet more "Chinese toys" having lead, I cannot help but yell at the tv. I am so frustrated with the media and the buying public, but most especially the American toy companies, for putting the blame on Chinese factories. These toys don't bear the name of these factories. They bear the name of Mattel and it's Mattel's responsibility to make sure the toys are what they should be, before they hit the stores.

My dad works in China often, as you know, as a quality control inspector for a garment company. This company he works for sews for and sells to a, ahem, rather large retailer in the USA. That retailer is almost ridiculous with it's rules of what is acceptable and not acceptable when it comes to quality issues. And this is only as refers to the washability of LACE on panties. I completely agree with your point here that perhaps the TOY companies need to be as meticulous in what they will accept as quality in the things they sell. Point being that the safety of our children should be of chief imprortance. I mean to say, matching lace is important and all... but there is this LITTLE issue about lead....

In Belgium, the China toys fear has not been spread as much as in the USA I belief...and they did put in the news as well that Mattel admitted making design mistakes themselves.

I listened to both podcasts in full and I have to say much of what you spoke about is also true for foreigners who haven't lived in China, but even have just traveled within China. For example, the starring or being shocked by skin whitening or the strong contrast between rural places and cities.
